RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior pitcher
Matt Fyffe went the distance while allowing just three hits in a 4-0 victory for the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team Saturday afternoon. With the win over Tennessee Tech, the Colonels (28-20, 16-7 OVC) have now won six of eight conference series this season.
Fyffe improved to 8-0 in his final season in a Colonel jersey and lowered his ERA to 1.51. He is the first EKU pitcher to toss a complete game shutout since
Paul Duncan threw a no-hitter against Chicago State on May 2, 2009.
Fyffe only faced two major Tennessee Tech (19-30, 9-14) threats to score all afternoon. In the fifth, Ben Burgess led off with a double to deep center field. From there, Fyffe settled down to get a ground out, foul out and fly ball to end the inning.
One inning later, Tennessee Tech loaded the bases with just one out. The righty was able to escape without any damage thanks to a picture-perfect, double-play ground ball.
Eastern got all of the runs it would need in the third. Senior
Dustin Dunlop led off the frame with a sharp single to left field. After moving to second on a ground out, Dunlop came around to score on an RBI single from sophomore
Sean Hagen.
The Colonels added a run in the sixth following a lead-off double from senior
Richie Rodriguez. He moved to third on a bunt single from junior
Austin Grisham. Rodriguez then hustled home on a wild pitch from TTU starter Matthew Shepherd.
In the eighth, Eastern Kentucky got a pair of insurance runs thanks to a
Bryan Soloman two-run home run over the left field foul pole. Soloman has now homered in three of the last four games and raised his total to a team-best 13 round trippers.
Shepherd (4-4) took the loss for Tennessee Tech, but struck out 10 Colonels in 7.2 innings.
The two teams will conclude the three-game set tomorrow, May 13. First pitch has been moved from 1 p.m., to noon due to the threat of inclement weather.
