RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri on Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels fell to the Redhawks in game one, 13-11, and in game two, 9-4.

With the wins, SEMO (13-6, 6-0 OVC) finished off a weekend sweep of EKU (7-12, 1-5 OVC).

Eastern led 2-0 through the first three innings of game one, thanks to RBIs by senior Bryan Soloman and freshman Kyle Nowlin.  The Redhawks took the lead in the fourth on a single through the left side by Branden Boggetto that scored three runs.  The Colonels answered in the bottom half of the fourth.  Freshman Taylor Blair put EKU back on top 6-3 with a three-run home run over the right center field fence.  It was Blair's first career homer.

Southeast Missouri scored in each of the next four innings, including a two-run home run by Matt Tellor in the fifth.  Derek Gibson's two-run double down the right field line in the eighth extended the lead to 11-6.  Gibson finished the first game 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs.  Dalton Hewitt was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

Trailing 13-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth, EKU pushed across five in an attempt to rally.  Sophomore Luke Wurzelbacher drove in two with a triple to left center.  Freshman Ben Fisher's ground out scored the fifth run of the inning, but the rally attempt ended there.

Wurzelbacher finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.  Blair had a pair of hits in four at bats, one run and three RBIs.

Right-hander Ryan Lenaburg (2-1) picked up the win after giving up four earned runs on nine hits in seven innings.  He walked two and struck out four.  Left-hander Tanner Perkins (1-3) suffered the loss.  The senior allowed eight runs, seven of which were earned, on 13 hits.  He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

In game two, EKU again took an early lead after Nowlin tripled to lead off the bottom of the first and then scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Doug Teegarden.

However, SEMO plated three runs in the top of the fourth and then added another in the top of the fifth on a Scott Mitchell RBI single that made it 4-1 in favor of the Redhawks.

EKU got one run back off an RBI base hit by senior Sean Hagen in the home half of the sixth, and then tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wurzelbacher led off the seventh with a double to left center. After freshman Justin Cessna walked, freshman Shea Sullivan laced a single down the left field line that scored Wurzelbacher. With one out in the inning, Blair walked to load the bases for Nowlin, who ripped a base hit into right field, scoring Sullivan to tie the score at 4-4. However, the next batter, Teegarden, then grounded into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play that halted the Colonel rally.

SEMO retook the lead with a run in the top of the eighth and then tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth blow the game open.

Freshman right-hander Caleb Johnson started on the mound for EKU and picked up a no-decision, going 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Junior right-hander Cody Creamer (0-1) got the loss for the Colonels, as he was responsible for SEMO's decisive runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Right-hander Alex Siddle (2-1) earned the win for the Redhawks, pitching a scoreless inning of relief.

Nowlin finished game two 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Sullivan went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Mitchell picked up four hits to pace SEMO at the plate in game two.

The Colonels will host East Tennessee State on Tuesday.  First pitch at Turkey Hughes field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
