RICHMOND, Ky.
– Junior Anthony Ottrando and freshman #A.J. Jamison# drove in a combined 13 runs as the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team routed Morehead State, 25-6, on Sunday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field in the deciding game of this weekend’s conference series.

With the win, EKU improves to 14-8 (4-2 OVC) on the season while Morehead State falls to 7-17 (1-5 OVC).

Sophomore Paul Duncan (4-2) delivered another solid Sunday performance and earned the win for EKU, working eight innings and surrendering just six runs on 11 hits. The southpaw also fanned seven batters. Freshman Greg Terry came on in the ninth and held the Eagles scoreless on just one hit.

Trey Smith (0-3) picked up the loss for the Eagles, pitching just 2.1 innings and allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits.

Offensively, EKU was led by a host of players. Ottrando went 4-for-6 with seven RBI and two runs scored while Jamison batted 3-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored. The freshman also blasted two home runs during the game. Freshman Michael Garcia, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and freshman Jacob Daniel batted 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

The Colonels scored more than two runs in every inning except the eighth.

Taylor Davis paced the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored. J.D. Ashbrook, meanwhile, batted 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored on the day.

Ottrando singled home sophomore Jayson Langfels and senior Tyler Rehmel in the bottom of the first to give the Colonels an early 2-0 lead. EKU built upon that lead in the bottom of the second when senior Matt Davis scored Jamison with a sacrifice fly to center. After senior Aaron Barrows plated freshman Richie Rodriguez with a double in the same inning, Rehmel scored Barrows with a single through the left side that made it 5-0.

The Eagles cut the deficit to two in the top of the third when Taylor Davis ripped a bases-clearing double to right center that made the score 5-3.

The Colonels, however, plated two in their half of the third and then five in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Daniel singled home Langfels and Ottrando for two runs in the fourth before Jamison crushed his first home run of the day, a three-run shot to left center, that made it 12-3.

With Duncan dealing from the mound, EKU continued to pile on runs, scoring three in both the fifth and sixth and then plating seven in the seventh. Jamison blasted his second bomb of the day to open the seventh. Rodriguez followed that up with a double off the wall in left center. After Davis walked, Barrows laced an RBI single to right, scoring Rodriguez. Freshman Dustin Dunlop went down on strikes for the first out of the inning before Langfels singled to right center to load the bases. Ottrando then crushed a double to right field that scored Davis and Barrows and advanced Langfels to third. The next batter, freshman Alan Abreu, legged out an infield single to the shortstop, plating Langfels. After sophomore Ryan Faidley fanned, Jamison brought home Ottrando with a single through the right side. Davis then capped the scoring for the inning with a single that plated Abreu.

A two-run home run by Davis highlighted a three run eighth for the Eagles; however, it was not enough as Terry shut down Morehead State in the ninth to seal the victory.

The Colonels return to action on Tuesday, March 31, when they host the Miami University Redhawks at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
