RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore
Jayson Langfels blasted a two-run walk off home run to lead the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team past in-state rival Western Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon, 8-7. Langfels then smashed two more home runs in the second game of the day as the Colonels rolled past Berea College, 32-4.
It was Langfels’ second walk-off home run in the last eight days, and it led the Colonels to their third consecutive victory over WKU dating back to 2007.
The Colonels (9-5) have now won six straight games games, their longest win streak since 2005.
With the game tied 5-5 in the top of the ninth, Matt Payton ripped an RBI triple and Terrence Dayleg brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to give the Hilltoppers (12-5) a 7-5 advantage. After senior
Matt Davis walked to open the home half of the ninth, junior
Anthony Ottrando advanced him to second on a groundout. Senior
Tyler Rehmel then laced an RBI single through the right side of the infield that scored Davis and brought the Colonels to within one. Langfels, subsequently, roped a 2-0 fastball over the wall in left field to end the game.
Freshman
Matt Harris (1-0) received the win for EKU, working the final three innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
Junior
Chris Hord started on the mound for the Colonels and delivered a solid two innings, giving up just one run on one hit. Junior
Jim Clancy worked the fourth and the fifth innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Sophomore
Paul Duncan pitched the fifth and the sixth and held the Hilltoppers scoreless while only giving up two hits.
Bryce Jenney (1-1) picked up the loss for WKU, going just a third of an inning in the ninth while allowing three runs on two hits, one of which was Langfels’ dramatic blast.
Langfels finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He opened the second inning with a triple to right center that tied him for the most career triples (12) in EKU history.
Ottrando batted 3-for-5 on the day with two runs driven in while freshman
Michael Garcia went 3-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and his first career home run, a solo shot to left center in the sixth inning that brought the Colonels to within one run of the Hilltoppers.
The Hilltoppers were led offensively by Chad Cregar, who batted 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored and an RBI, and Kes Carter, who finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
After WKU took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Colonels responded with two runs in their half of the inning. Junior
Joey Stevens plated Langfels with a sacrifice fly to score the first run, and then Garcia singled into right field to score sophomore
Ryan Faidley and give the Colonels a 2-1 advantage.
A two-run double to left center by Jake Wells, however, highlighted a four-run fourth for the Hilltoppers that gave WKU a 5-2 lead.
From there, EKU slowly picked away at the lead. Ottrando plated Davis with a base hit in the fifth, Garcia homered in the sixth, and Ottrando tied in the seventh with a double to right center that, again, scored Davis.

The Colonels continued to swing hot bats in the second game of the day as EKU cruised past Berea College, 32-4.
Senior
Alex Napier (1-0) started for EKU and got the win, pitching two solid innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
Freshman
Eric Sanders worked the third and the fourth innings and gave up just one unearned run on one hit. Freshman
Greg Terry pitching a perfect fifth, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Sophomore
Macon Smith pitched the sixth and allowed one run and two hits. Senior
David Owens came on in the seventh and held the Mountaineers to just one hit.
Starter Ethan Travelstead picked up the loss for Berea, going one inning and allowing nine runs on seven hits.
Langfels crushed two more home runs against Berea, bringing his season total to a team-best five. The sophomore went 4-for-6 in the game with four runs scored and five RBI.
Davis, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 with five runs scored and four RBI. The senior’s performance extended his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games.
Ottrando chipped in with a home run in the fifth, his first of the season. Freshmen #A.J. Jamison
and Dustin Dunlop#, meanwhile, both recorded their first career round trippers during the game.
The Mountaineers were led at the plate by Ethan Smith, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, and Bubba Owens, who batted 2-for-3 with a run driven in.
The Colonels begin conference play this weekend when they travel to Austin Peay for a three-game series. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
