Box Score I Play-by-Play
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team nearly overcame a five-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning, but the Colonels’ comeback bid finished one run short in a 6-5 loss at Wofford in game two of this weekend’s series at King Field.
With EKU trailing 6-1 heading into the top of the ninth, senior
Jacob Daniel reached first on an error to lead off the inning and then went to second when junior
Austin Grisham walked. The next batter, freshman
Demetrius Moorer, reached on another Wofford error that allowed Daniel to score and advanced Grisham to third. After sophomore
Bryan Soloman scored Grisham with an RBI groundout, junior
Alex Hughes singled home Moorer to make the score 6-4. Sophomore
Sean Hagen then reached on an infield single and senior #A.J. Jamison# walked to load the bases with just one out.
The score became 6-5 when Wofford right-hander Eric Eck balked, allowing junior
Justin Trent, who was pinch-running for Hughes, to score, Hagen to advance to third and Jamison to advance to second. Eck, however, then struck out senior
Dustin Dunlop and intentionally put senior
Richie Rodriguez aboard, setting up a force out at any base. The move worked as Daniel, batting for the second time in the inning, grounded to third to end the game.
With the loss, EKU drops to 5-9 on the season. The win improves Wofford to 8-7.
Senior left-hander
Greg Terry (1-1) started for EKU and picked up the loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on 10 hits. Junior right-hander
Austin Rexroat and senior right-hander
Lincoln Wagner held the Terriers scoreless over the final 2.1 innings of the game to allow the Colonels’ comeback.
Right-hander Jesse Morris (1-0) earned the win for Wofford, hurling 8.1 strong innings while allowing four runs (only one of the earned) on just two hits while striking out eight batters. Eck earned the save, his fourth of the season.
EKU and Wofford will square off the in the rubber match of this weekend’s series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
