Cliff Tinnell was a three-sport letterman, earning ‘E’s in baseball, basketball and football. Regarded as the finest catcher in Eastern’s history, Tinnell was a member of the All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball team for four seasons , and an all-league football player his senior year as a guard.
He played semi-professional baseball for a time after his graduation, before earning his master’s at Eastern in 1948. A professor of industrial arts at East Tennessee State University from 1948-58, he received the doctorate at George Peabody College in 1952. He was a professor of industrial arts at Appalachian State University. In 1958-59, and served as a visiting professor at Arizona State University from 1965-69.
