‘Spider’ Thurman, former Director of Alumni Affairs at Eastern, was a ‘Little All-American’ football selection in 1940 for the Eastern Maroons. Thurman came to Eastern from Benham High School where he was an All-State quarterback in 1936. He was also a three-year choice on the All-Cumberland Valley Conference football and basketball teams and the All-District and All-Regional basketball squads. 

While at Eastern, Thurman was also an All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Football Association football selection from 1938-40. 

Before accepting his position at EKU, he was head basketball coach at Clay County High School from 1949-62. He was chosen Coach-of-the-Year in the Kentucky Southeast Conference four times, while his Clay County team won 12 district titles and six Regional Championships.
